The Route of the Hiawatha is a world-class mountain bike or hike trail located in the beautiful Bitterroot Mountains near Lookout Pass Ski Area. This historic section of the old Milwaukee railroad has been described as one of the most scenic stretches of railroad in the country. The trail is currently 15 miles long and includes 10 tunnels and 7 sky-high trestles. The 1.7 mile long St. Paul Pass tunnel is a highlight of the ride.

It's been called one of the most scenic stretches of railroad in the country winding through tunnels and over high steel trestles. Some of the tunnels are very dark, so all users must have working lights and safety helmets to ride the trail. Adult supervision is required for children under the age of 14. Dogs and pets are not allowed on the trail. Bike rentals include helmets and lights.

The best part is...it's all downhill with a shuttle service to take you back to the top. The shuttles run daily in the peak season (around end of May to beginning of October) and the schedule is posted at the trailheads. The trail can be enjoyed by a wide variety of ability levels utilizing the gentle 1.8% grade. Restroom, picnic tables and numerous historical and interpretive signs are located along the route.
