Engage the river and learn the language of nature. What sets Wapiti apart from all other companies is the degree with which they read the river environment and how they impart the mysteries of nature's talk to guests. They have spent a lifetime studying the ways of nature and have gained a unique perspective uncommon in today's world.

Offering natural history river trips and ecotours, these personalized whitewater and fishing guide services were established in 1979.

Ecotours include pristine wilderness, whitewater adventure, and heartfelt journeys of remote solitude. You can enjoy trout, salmon, and steelhead fishing , chukar hunting, wolf trips, or a simple respite to enjoy pure natural beauty. The rivers toured in Idaho and Oregon range from class II to V and provide mild to wild journeys of outdoor adventure.

Each pristine ecotour from a half day to six days is a dynamic experience in adventure travel, made possible by river tours that are small group focused. You will travel a more leisure pace, and gain a better appreciation for the richness of both the river's natural and historic character.

Chukar Hunting and Steelhead Fishing
. Description | Pricing | Photos | Reviews
Chukar may be one of the most challenging upland game birds to hunt on the planet. They like the steep country of the Salmon River canyons, walk uphill, and fly downhill real fast. You may be a great shot in easy conditions, but what about when side-hilling across forty-degree slopes, while birds whiz by at sixty miles per hour? That's why your dog is welcome and dogs are provided for those who don't. They make life easier on steep terrain. Wait til you see the landscapes beautiful enough itself to take your breath away. Between hunts you can enjoy vibrant steelhead from 6-18 pounds tearing away at the end of your line. Fish sometimes exceed 3 feet in length and are terrific tail-dancing fighters. You and your dog will ride in a high-sided driftboat, furnished with padded seats, backrest, heater, and waterproof compartment for your day gear. These boats offer you five-star style and comfort. Extra guides are hired to run baggage, detail camp, and cook. This enables you more time to hunt and fish with the sporting guides. A note about the sporting guides: Living close to nature all the time and depending a great deal on fish and game for food and livelihood, the guides who help sportsmen seek their quarry have developed highly expert skills. They will help you immensely in finding fish and game. Rods and reels are provided for drift fishing and accommodate fly fishermen with their own gear. Hunters must bring their own shotguns, loads, and softshell cases. Specialized waterproof bags for all softshell cases are also included.

Fishing on the Salmon River
. Description | Pricing | Photos | Reviews
How would you like to go fishing in a riverscape setting so beautiful that you forget you are even on a fishing trip? And, how would you like to share that experience with a guide who enjoys your success and enthusiasm as much as his own? Who will share fishing secrets learned in over 50 years of fishing, 30 years of guiding, and a seasoned background in the professional fisheries and wildlife field? Owner/guide Gary Lane is the main person you will fish with (except when outside experts join for special trips). He uses a driftboat with his own unique design of creature comforts: padded seat, backrest, heater, umbrella, and splash guards. Gary believes it's more fun fishing when you are fighting fish, not the elements.
Each spring and fall sizeable numbers of ocean-run steelhead follow their biology to the Salmon River to help perpetuate the species. There are exciting fishing trips from 1-6 days for these outstanding fighters.
The cost for youth twelve and under when accompanied by two adults is half rate.

Lower Salmon River
. Description | Pricing | Photos | Reviews
Tour central Idaho's Lower Salmon River - "River of No Return"; made famous by the Lewis and Clark Expedition guided by Sacagawea , and the Snake River through the bottom end of Hells Canyon , recognized as the deepest canyon in North America. The semi-arid Salmon River gorge contains several micro-chasm canyons, dignified with exciting rapids and truly beautiful beaches. The Salmon River remains a pristine waterway and the longest free-flowing river in the lower U.S. It cuts through a canyon more than a thousand feet deeper than Arizona's Grand Canyon. Here you will feel like an ant whirling about an immensity beyond perception. The lava formations, consisting of columnar and pillow basalts are all part of the great visual treat you will see while traversing the canyon. In fact, on one section of river, you will actually float through the very heart of an ancient lava flow. Its just one of the many geologic wonders you will find so fascinating during this trip. Wapiti River Guides offer over 100 miles of river, with assorted access points which enables them to offer you anywhere from ½ to 5 day trips. Within the precipitous side slopes of the main canyon are four major gorges. Each one is uniquely beautiful and contains a distinctive character. Because the river is still in its natural state and there are no dams to capture sediment load, recruitment of sand to the canyon has created huge beaches. They make the most splendid campsites that await your footprints and comfortable nights rest beneath the stars. Probably the most outstanding character of the river is the dynamic nature of its rapids. It contains exciting whitewater year round that provides the level of intensity that appeals to a broad range of prospective interests. During high water, many of the rapids are as spectacular as any in the world, rivaling even the most famed Grand Canyon whitewater.
